Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Here are the answers to common questions about enrollment, daily operations, and our approach at A Childcare Like Home.

Enrollment and Logistics

What are your hours of operation?

We are open from 7:00 AM to 11:00 PM, Monday through Friday. We offer these extended evening hours to accommodate the unique schedules of working families.

What are the current tuition rates?

Tuition rates vary based on the child's age (Infant, Toddler, Preschool, School-Age) and the required schedule (full-time, part-time, or flexible hours). Please schedule a tour to receive our current rate sheet and discuss the best enrollment option for your family.

Do you accept Mountain Heart?

Answer: Yes! We are proud to accept Mountain Heart certificates. We believe every child in Beckley deserves quality care, and we are happy to work with you to make that possible

Do you provide meals and snacks?

Yes, we provide nutritious hot meals (lunch) and afternoon snacks that comply with USDA guidelines. Our menus prioritize fresh ingredients and accommodate common allergies. Infants require parents to provide pre-prepared formula or breast milk.

What is your policy on holidays and scheduled closures?

We are closed on all major holidays. We also observe scheduled closure days that align with local school schedules for staff training and professional development. A full list of closure dates is provided upon enrollment.

What items do I need to supply for my child?

Parents are asked to supply diapers (or training pants), wipes, at least two changes of clothing, and any specialized creams or medications. Infants also require prepared formula or breast milk. We provide bedding and toys.

Philosophy and Curriculum

What curriculum do you use?

We follow a play-based curriculum centered on the belief that children learn best through self-directed and guided play. Our daily activities integrate foundational skills (literacy, math, science) into hands-on projects, stories, and social collaboration.

How do you handle nap time and rest periods?

We provide individualized quiet time and rest periods for all children. Infants follow their home schedules. All children are required to participate in a quiet rest period each afternoon to ensure necessary downtime.

What is your approach to discipline and guidance?

We use a positive guidance approach focused on teaching social skills and emotional regulation. We encourage empathy, problem-solving, and communication. We focus on redirection, setting clear boundaries, and teaching children appropriate ways to express their feelings.

How do you communicate with parents throughout the day?

We use the Brightwheel app to provide daily updates, including photos, notes on meals/naps, and developmental observations. We also offer scheduled conferences twice a year.

Health and Safety

What are your emergency procedures?

We have detailed emergency plans in place for fire, weather events, and medical incidents. All staff are trained in CPR and First Aid, and regular emergency drills are conducted to ensure staff and children are prepared.

What is your sick child policy?

To maintain a healthy environment, any child exhibiting signs of contagious illness (fever, vomiting, persistent cough, etc.) must be kept home. They may return 24 hours after being symptom-free without medication. A copy of the full exclusion policy is provided upon enrollment.

What security measures do you have in place?

As an in-home setting, we ensure secure access control. Visitors are screened, and only authorized individuals listed on the enrollment form are permitted to pick up children. Our home is inspected and licensed to meet all state safety standards.
